Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) issued the following statement in recognition of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month:
"Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is a time for us to celebrate the past and present Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders that have helped shape our nation. As artistic visionaries, scientific luminaries, civic leaders, and more, the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community has played a vital role in making the United States a better place.
"The long, rich history of the AANHPI community is one of success and sacrifice, of triumph and tragedy. Unfortunately, this history is often overlooked. As a result, too many Americans’ views of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders are shaped by offensive media portrayals and racist stereotypes. Now, during a time of rising violence against AANHPI communities, it is more important than ever that we recommit ourselves to honoring the full story of the AANHPI experience and condemning racist violence in all its forms."
